Null subjects and information structure in Asian Englishes

Research on the so-called "New Englishes" is one of the most prolific areas of study in English linguistics, both in terms of theoretical debate and use of state-of-the-art methodology. Investigating the morphosyntactic structure of these varieties can provide insights into processes of language contact and its linguistic consequences, while a contrastive analysis with the superstrate can contribute to the understanding of the contact-shaped as well as the "standard" English grammatical system. In my PhD project, I am conducting a detailed investigation of a well-known morphosyntactic feature of Asian varieties of English. The analysis is based on authentic spoken language data, provided by the respective ICE-corpora. It is thus intended as a contribution to the ongoing debate on the amount of substrate influence in contact varieties and the structural and functional requirements in the languages involved that enable the integration of new features into the emerging grammatical system (e.g. Bao 2010, Sharma 2009).
