This workshop aims at exploring different methods of modelling L1 or L2 development in longitudinal datasets, drawing on the tenets of Dynamic Usage-Based perspectives to language acquisition (Verspoor & Behrens, 2011). The program consists of keynote lectures from experts in the field through which they will discuss their relevant research findings. The keynote speakers and the attendees will have ample opportunities to discuss current trends and issues, as well. Volunteering participants will also get the chance to share their work (in progress) through individual presentations. The major foci of the program will be around issues concerning how to dynamically model L1 or L2 development through the analysis of longitudinal data.

The discussions will be guided by the following grand tour questions:

• What aspects of language learning, development, and change can be analyzed dynamically?

• What counts as longitudinal in FLA and SLA research?

• What dimensions of L1 or L2 competence can be analyzed?

• What effective methods can be implemented to analyze longitudinal development?

• What issues/factors have to be considered when collecting and analyzing (longitudinal) data?

• How can we productively discuss constructs of language development, such as complexity,

accuracy, and fluency?

The expert scholars invited to conduct the keynote sessions (lectures) in this workshop are:

• Prof. Dr. Marjolijn Verspoor, Professor of Language Learning with a focus on English

language and second language acquisition, the Department of English Language and Culture,

the University of Groningen

• Prof. Dr. Wander Lowie, Professor of Applied Linguistics with a focus on Neurolinguistics and

language development, the Department of Applied Linguistics, the University of Groningen

All doctoral and postdoctoral researchers with relevant ongoing projects or similar empirical

interests are welcome to attend this workshop. It is also possible to have individual

consultation sessions with the experts provided those participating researchers give short

presentations on their work. Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from all philology

departments affiliated with the HPSL network as well as Swiss universities of Teacher

Education will be called for participation.

Detailed information on the program will be provided in due time.

Please register to the workshop until 30th of June via e-mail to one of the organizers

(zeynep.koylu@unibas.ch or sarah.faidt@unibas.ch). The number of participants will be

limited to 20. Don’t forget to indicate in your e-mail whether you wish to participate in-person

or online, and whether you wish to have an individual consultation session with the experts

Prof. Verspoor and Prof. Lowie (this includes a short presentation on your research project).

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Basel in August,

Zeynep K.ylü & Sarah Faidt
