The Agentic Turn: Reimagining Data Analysis, Apps, and Interfaces in the Humanities
Large Language Models (LLMs) continue to impact how we work in the
Humanities. Beyond the epistemological and ethical implications of using
LLMs for research design or writing, they can be employed as coding agents.
In the (Digital) Humanities, agentic coding holds the potential to
fundamentally reshape the field, justifying the notion of an “agentic turn”.
This talk elaborates on the principles of using coding agents to facilitate
tasks such as text analysis, data visualization, and the development of
interfaces and research apps. Drawing on data and workflows from several
projects, I demonstrate how requirements-based agentic coding can help
humanists reclaim control over their research data, increase research
quality, and rescue breaking or already broken DH projects.
