In this talk I consider general questions to do with swearing — what it is, why speakers do it, and how swearing patterns change with time. I also look at shifts in social attitudes toward swearwords and the legal repercussions. The focus is on English swearing patterns (with examples drawn from written and spoken data banks of Australian English), and I am hoping that the audience will provide a cross-linguistic perspective
